Many came at the insistence of the church. Their mission? Build settlements on the dry prairie of southern Alberta. And build the irrigation canal system - the first of its kind in Canada - that would eventually turn it into today's rich farmland. Along the way, those Mormon pioneers built the unique towns of Cardston, Magrath, Raymond and Stirling - all laid out according to a model community structure. The Plat of Zion, with wide avenues and a unique farm/urban interface. Today, Canada's Mormon trail features a mix of national and provincial historic sites, safe, walkable communities, extraordinary landscapes, and a unique cutural heritage.
